WORSHIP AT HOWARD CHAPEL
SUNDAYS AT 10AM
From the parking lot, please enter through the glass doors to the Atrium! Restrooms are to the right. The Sanctuary is to the left.

Worship
When you visit, please feel free to be yourself. Some people wear a dress or a button down shirt, while others wear what they do around town. All are welcome. Come as you are.

Giving
You don’t have to worry about bringing anything with you. Your presence matters more than anything to God and to us. Anyone wishing to offer tithes may place their envelope in the plate at the altar. Every dollar of every offering supports local and global charities.

Families
Children are always welcome in worship. Through their participation, they learn to sense God’s presence, to pray, and to be a follower of Christ. A dedicated play space is provided in the Sanctuary. Changing tables are available in the restrooms.

Accessibility
Accessible entrances are located by the designated parking spaces. Accessible restrooms are across the hall from the Sanctuary. Every floor has elevator access.

Each year we are proud to give away half our budget to the community and the world.

A TRADITIONAL AND FAMILIAR WORSHIP SERVICE
WHAT TO EXPECT
Over the course of an hour, a service begins with greeting each other, singing, readings of scripture, prayers and a message of encouragement.
Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month. You do not need to be a member of any church to share in worship and to participate in the sacraments of communion or baptism. Bread is broken and given, and you may choose to dip the bread in a common cup. The grape juice is unfermented and open to people sensitive to alcohol. Gluten-free bread is available; please notify the pastor beforehand.

A MESSAGE FROM
Our Pastor

Hello! I’m Rev. James McSavaney, and a big part of my calling is to be available to get to know you – your stories, your concerns, your history, your hopes. It’s a dream, decades in the making. I have lots of dreams for the churches I get to serve with. I think they’re the best way for connecting communities, bridging the divides we have as people, and overcoming the shortcomings we face day to day.
It has been an honor to lead congregations in their service to the community, outreach to all, and worship of God. I also have a heart for visiting and being present with people in crisis. I’ve seen how God’s presence can be felt even in the most challenging and painful circumstances. A lot of the lessons that I learned in seminary – first, while studying at Emory University in Atlanta and then finishing my studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC – have helped people just like you.
On a Sunday morning, you might hear stories in my sermons about my spouse, Amy. We met during a summer internship with a multiethnic church in downtown Philadelphia, leading a children’s day camp. The experience formed a lot of our Christian identity. We both care about the people we find ourselves with and want to do what we can to help everyone succeed. Amy is an attorney with the National Women’s Law Center in Washington, DC, where she works for equality and fairness for women around the country. We love our two children – Walker and Arthur. I tell our sons that Amy wants to make the world fair, and I want to make the world kind.
What do you want to make the world? Better? Gentler? Fairer? Maybe you can pray about it, because I’d love to hear more.
Until we see each other face to face, peace be with you +

The Good News
Do you want to get a sense of what you might hear week to week? Maybe you’re wary of some pastors who preach hate from the pulpit. Maybe you’d like to know if you’d be welcome here (you are). Read the manuscripts for yourself.

Let Your Light Shine
This week, I’ve been paying attention to the sights outside my window. Even though I’ve found it too cold for a long walk, I’ve been blessed to witness a family of deer taking refuge in my backyard. I’ve watched a rabbit sit still on top of the ice with its fur keeping it warm. I’ve…

Fishing for People
Early in the Gospel story, Jesus withdraws to Galilee and makes his home in Capernaum. Matthew is keen to point out that Jesus is in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, in fulfillment of the scriptures. The Book of Isaiah tells of a people who sat in darkness who have seen the light dawn upon…

What are you seeking? Come and see.
What are you looking for? What are you seeking? In the Gospel of John Jesus asks the disciples a probing and introspective question. I wonder how they perceived it. Did they think about how they wished Israel could overthrow the Roman occupation? Did they imagine Jesus leading the charge? Did they want Israel’s greatness to…
